Cold capping is a technique used during chemotherapy to reduce or prevent hair loss in cancer patients. It involves wearing extremely cold gel-filled, helmet-like caps that contour to the entire scalp before, during, and after chemotherapy sessions.
The cold temperature of cold caps constricts the blood vessels beneath the skin of the scalp, preventing the chemotherapy medicine from reaching the hair follicles, therefore allowing the patient to preserve their hair. The cold also slows down the hair follicle metabolism, making the hair cells dormant or less active, further preventing the absorption of chemotherapeutic drugs.
“Still Me” Cold Caps are rented on a monthly basis for $465 per month plus a one-time $300 deposit which will be refunded within 30 days of the caps return. (Still Me Cold Capping requires the first and last month’s rental payment paid upon agreement.)
Research has shown that cold capping is very effective, but It is extremely important to understand that hair loss prevention is not guaranteed, and results may vary by individual. Please be sure to speak with your oncologist prior to using Cold Caps. Patients with various forms of blood cancer, lymphomas, and melanoma patients should avoid cold cap therapy.
Overall, cold cap therapy is very well tolerated. For the first few minutes, the patient may experience mild discomfort. The discomfort then dissipates, and the patient is fairly comfortable. The most common reported side effects are headaches and coldness.
Unfortunately, once the chemo drugs have reached the hair follicle, the effects are irreversible. Caps should be worn for every single treatment for best results.
