Our story begins when Mary Beth was diagnosed with invasive ductal HER 2 positive breast cancer in February of 2022. Mary Beth, a high school teacher, did extensive research into Cold Capping to discover that it is a proven, non-invasive, drug free method to preserve one’s hair. Colleen, her Cold Capper, lifelong friend, and an RN, had not heard of Cold Capping, signaling that even in the Medical Profession there lies a knowledge deficit. Mary Beth underwent an aggressive chemotherapy regiment of 4 cycles of Adriamycin Cyclophosphamide.(AC) and 12 Taxol to which, without Cold Capping, was a course guaranteed to result in hair loss. Mary Beth did purchase a wig (that she has never worn), in the event that Cold Capping was unsuccessful, as we were met with much skepticism.
Upon entering the Chemo Suite for the first time, and each time thereafter, we were both amazed to find nobody else Cold Capping. The Chemo Suite was filled with people of all ages who had lost their hair, and we thought ‘people must not know about this or more would definitely be doing it’. The nurses confirmed that it was rare to see someone Cold Capping, and as such, they were amazed to see the results! Mary Beth kept her hair! The oncologist, who was initially skeptical, was so impressed that she began referring other patients to Mary Beth for tips and advice about keeping their hair too.
Learning of the lack of awareness with Cold Capping, and understanding the profound negative impact losing hair can have on one’s self image, healing and overall wellbeing, we decided we wanted to make Cold Capping support more accessible to our area. We have walked this path, and have the real life experience to provide clients with education, hands on demonstration, tips and support, to embrace the same success as Mary Beth had in preserving their hair.
Mary Beth did experience shedding, (which was to be expected), however, it was unnoticeable to anyone but herself, with some thinning around the ears, but overall keeping 90% of her hair!
Mary Beth was very diligent in following all of the recommendations for preserving her hair from the first chemo treatment until 3 months afterwards. A total of 8 months of no chemicals, heat, styling, dying, etc. and other recommendations that we will share with you to give you the best possible outcome.
Mary Beth will tell you ….
